A new araucarian fossil species from the Paleogene of southern Argentina Ameghiniana
Panti,Carolina; Césari,Silvia N.; Marenssi,Sergio A.; Olivero,Eduardo B..
A new Araucariaceaea from the Paleogene of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina is described. Araucaria pararaucana sp. nov. has imbricate, ovate-lanceolate leaves with an acute apex, characterized by the presence of discontinuous and longitudinally oriented stomatal rows separated by epidermal cells, which may be slightly sinuous. Stomatal guard cell surface is granular. These fossil leaves are compared with the extant sections Bunya, Intermedia and Araucaria. Their anatomical characters along with the external morphology suggest a close affinity with the extant southern Patagonian species A. araucana (Molina) K. Koch. The record of this new late Eocene species provides more evidence for a probable unique representation of Section Araucaria in the area...

From genetic neighbourhood to local community: Estimating a key parameter of the Unified Neutral Theory of Biodiversity RChHN
RICHARDSON,BARRY J; ARIAS-BOHART,ELIZABETH T.
Issues related to the size and nature of what is termed a ''local community'' in a continuous metacommunity under unified neutral theory are explored. Developments in the parallel field of neutral genetics theory allow the size of genetic neighbourhoods in the context of isolation by distance processes to be calculated. These suggest a way to estimate the geographical size of an equivalent form of local community in ecology. It is derived from the estimated spatial autocorrelation value at zero geographical distance and this is obtained using the distribution of the relative frequencies of species in field samples separated by varying geographical distance. A data set of 62000 beetles collected for other purposes, and consisting of beetle samples collected...

Monoicy in A. angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze (Araucariaceae): I. Morphological aspects of the reproductive structures Anais da ABC (AABC)
Stefenon,Valdir M.; Caprestano,Clarissa A..
Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze is a dioecious conifer species native of Brazil. The rare occurrence of monoiceous specimens have been attributed to pathogenic infections or other injuries in adult trees. Here, the morphological characteristics of male and female cones and pollen grains of a monoiceous A. angustifolia are described. Male and female cones and pollen grains presented normal morphology, lacking any sort of injuries or infection and suggesting the existence of further grounds for the occurrence of monoicy in this conifer species.

Morphology and structure of the pollen cone and pollen grain of the Araucaria species from Argentina Biocell
Fueyo,Georgina M. del; Caccavari,Marta A.; Dome,Elizabeth A..
The pollen cone and the pollen grain of the two Argentinean species of Araucaria are described with LM, SEM and TEM. Primordia of pollen cones are formed in April and May and reach maturity by mid-October in A. angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze and by mid-November in A. araucana. (Mol.) K. Koch. Characters of the mature pollen cones and microsporophylls between both taxa are clearly differentiated. Pollen grains are spheroidal-subspheroidal, inaperturate, and asaccate with granulate exine and a subequatorial annular area that corresponds to the sexine thickness. Sculpturing consists of irregularly dispersed granules that are sometimes fused to each other (A. angustifolia) or forming microrugulae (A. araucana). Microgranules and microspinules are also present....

Taquara bamboo control as an alternative to recovery of the Araucaria Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Sanquetta, Carlos Roberto.
Native bamboos occur abundantly in forests with predominance of Araucaria angustifolia that werehighly disturbed by anthropogenic causes. The occupation of the competitive space by these plants may indicate that there is a dependency relationship between the establishment of tree seedlings and bamboos in the ecosystem. This study aimed at evaluating the establishment of seedlings of tree species that appeared naturally in an area strongly dominated by bamboos in the understory. An  experiment of mechanical control of bambooswas established in the municipality of General Carneiro, southern Paraná State, with 1.00 hectare, following thecompletely randomized design. The results showed that felling of bamboos may be effective to stimulate theappearance of many...
